Descrizione prodotto
The Heinkel He 177 Greif (Griffin) represents the Luftwaffe's most ambitious attempt to develop a strategic heavy bomber during World War II. This four-engine aircraft with unusual configuration operated in the final years of the conflict with cutting-edge experimental armaments.
Nicknamed "the German flying fortress", the He 177 featured a unique technical solution with four engines coupled in two nacelles, creating numerous engineering challenges but also remarkable performance when functioning correctly. The A-5 version represented the development pinnacle with significant reliability improvements.
The Revell 03913 kit in 1/72 scale allows recreation of this fascinating bomber with excellent detail and ease of assembly. A perfect model for those appreciating less common but historically significant Luftwaffe aircraft.
Glue and paints not included in the kit.
The Heinkel He 177 Greif occupies a particular place in German military aviation history as the only four-engine long-range heavy bomber mass-produced by the Luftwaffe during World War II. Its troubled development and brief but intense operational career reflect Nazi Germany's ambitions and technical challenges in the war's final years.
The project originated from a 1936 specification for a bomber capable of carrying 1,000 kg bombs over 5,000 km, with 500 km/h speed and dive-bombing capability. This last requirement, insisted upon by the Reichsluftfahrtministerium, led to the most controversial decision: using four Daimler-Benz DB 601 engines (later DB 606 and DB 610) coupled in pairs in two nacelles, each driving a single propeller. This "twin" configuration, technically defined as "Doppelmotor", was meant to reduce aerodynamic drag but created countless overheating problems and in-flight fires.
The A-5 version, entering production in 1943, incorporated numerous improvements based on painful operational experience of previous versions: improved fire protection, enhanced cooling systems, reinforced structure to withstand greater weights, and increased defensive armament with up to seven MG 131 machine gun and MG 151 cannon positions.
With a wingspan of 31.44 meters and length of 20.40 meters, the He 177 A-5 could carry impressive war loads: up to 6,000 kg of conventional bombs in internal and external configurations. But the most interesting aspect was employment of experimental guided weapons like Hs 293 anti-ship missiles and Fritz X glide bombs, making the He 177 one of history's first "stand-off" bombers.
Operationally, the He 177 served primarily on the Eastern Front and in anti-submarine operations in the Atlantic. Despite persistent technical problems, when functioning correctly it demonstrated remarkable performance: maximum speed of 565 km/h, ceiling of 8,000 meters, and exceptional range. Some examples participated in Operation Steinbock, the retaliatory bombing raids on London in 1944.
Approximately 1,100 He 177s were built in all variants before war's end, a significant number but insufficient to influence the conflict's outcome. The machine remains a fascinating example of ambitious engineering hampered by contradictory requirements and rushed development.
The Revell 03913 kit in 1/72 scale offers an excellent opportunity to recreate this rare bomber. At approximately 23 cm length with proportional wingspan, the model captures the He 177's elegant and menacing lines. Detail includes cockpit with gunner positions, defensive turrets, robust main landing gear, and options to represent different ordnance configurations. Revell mold quality ensures precise fit and relatively simple assembly considering the subject's complexity.
For World War II aviation enthusiasts, this kit represents the opportunity to add to their collection a unique piece of aeronautical history: the Luftwaffe's controversial but technically fascinating "Griffin".
Note: glue and paints must be purchased separately.
