The Mistel 1 represents one of the most innovative and audacious composite weapons of the German Luftwaffe during World War II. This unique weapon system combined a Messerschmitt Bf 109F-4 fighter mounted atop a modified Junkers Ju 88A-4 loaded with explosives, piloted toward strategic targets and then released by the upper fighter. Literally "mistletoe" in German, the Mistel was successfully employed during the Normandy invasion and against strategic bridges on the Oder River to slow the Soviet advance.

The Mistel system used a hollowed-out Ju 88 filled with 3800 kg of high-explosive in the forward section, transforming it into a remote-controlled guided missile. The upper Bf 109 pilot controlled the composite aircraft to the target, then released the explosive Ju 88 and returned to base. It was employed against bridges, ships and fortifications from 1944 to 1945.
