The CANT Z 506 Airone, produced by the Italian company C.R.D.A. (Cantieri Riuniti dell'Adriatico), was a low-wing, three-engine seaplane with dual floats, known for its exceptional reliability and robustness. It entered operational service in the late 1930s. Its structure was primarily made of wood, yet the aircraft design proved so effective that the Airone could operate even in particularly adverse weather conditions. It was used by the Regia Aeronautica for long-range bombing and maritime reconnaissance missions. Additionally, it was employed for search and rescue operations at sea. The excellent flying qualities are evidenced by its remarkable operational longevity, with some “506” models remaining in service until 1960 in the SAR units of the Italian Air Force.
